Sharm, Egypt: Top Scuba Diving Destination

Posted: under Travel.
Tags: africa, egypt, hobbies, home, leisure, recreation, Travel, vacation

by Jared Conley

Sharm el Skeikh, or just Sharm, is one of the hottest travel destinations in the Arab world, and for good reason. It’s quickly being recognized as one of the finest diving spots in the world, and the variety of activities available to the visitor is mind boggling.

Forty years ago, Sharm Egypt was little more than a tiny fishing village. But during Israel’s occupation, the land near Sharm’s center began to be developed and it gradually transformed into a tourist destination. It now contains most of the amenities that you would expect in a travel destination, except that it’s been able to maintain its historic roots.

Sharm and nearby Hurghada are located on the Red Sea coast, and just offshore there is a wide variety of beautiful coral and aquatic life, including sharks and dolphins, if that’s your cup of tea! Sharm caters to scuba divers of all levels, so even if you’re new to the activity, you’ll find a reputable dive operator who can accommodate you.

If scuba diving is not for you, there are plenty of other beach activities that you can take part in. Sharm and Hurghada beaches have gorgeous white sand and the water is crystal clear. Bad pictures are almost impossible to take here!

While some areas in Egypt are known more for their historic value, Sharm has a reputation as more of a beach or resort destination. Here you’ll find hotels in all price ranges, including some world-class properties, and you’ll also find an active nightlife, which is not particularly common in Egypt. But do expect to pay a hefty price for beer, wine, and spirits, even in this more liberal area.

Egypt entertains over 5 million travelers per year, and in recent years, over one quarter of them have visited Sharm. The locals are very friendly and accommodating with travelers, but there are still some taboo customs that you should be aware of if you’re planning a holiday. To get the most out of your vacation, look into Egypt packages, which will help you plan your travel.

For the most part, most of Egypt is generally safe. There is very little violent crime, and the most likely crime that you could be exposed to would be pick pocketing, but security is stationed in most public areas to protect the tourists’ interests.

Sharm is a beautiful city in an amazingly historical city. If you plan a holiday to Sharm, whether on its on or as part of one of the available Egypt packages, you will not be disappointed, and you will leave with some fantastic memories (and hopefully photographs) that will last a lifetime.

Asia Vacations

Although the season for a vacation is just past, there will be many more reason to go for a great vacation in the days and years to come. If you are among those who has not had an opportunity to come to the Asian region, I suggest you make your next vacation an Asian vacation. Not only will you have the time of your life in your Asian vacation, but you will also discover the joys of a whole new culture and way of life. Make that several new cultures, as nearly each country in the Asian region has its own, unique culture which is guarded and zealously protected.

Asia offers great value for the money, as the exchange rates in Asia favors the United States dollar. While you visit Asia you will find that you can stretch your dollar quite far and enjoy many sights and sounds. Many regions in Asia rely heavily on income from tourism, so your dollar will be gladly accepted. This doesn’t mean that you should pay the fist price you are offered, as bartering is a way of life in these regions, so save more by haggling before you commit to buy.

One reason to visit Asia is how diverse the country is. From India to China, you will find everything from desert to lush tropical jungles and amazing architecture. While there is no way you will see everything in one visit, you will certainly get your fill on each and every visit. It is advisable that when you visit you choose an angle to sculpt your visit, either to see the historic sites, enjoy the natural beauty, relax at some of the amazing health spas or just amble your way around. Try not to spread your trip out to too big of an area, or you will just feel hurried and you won’t have the time to enjoy everything there is to offer.

The same is the case with China. Mainland China itself, with its millions of villages, cities and towns to see, will occupy a fair bit of your time. And when you consider that your Asian vacation will never be complete without visiting regions like Tibet, Hong Kong and Taiwan (associated in one way or another with China) you will see that you invariably will crave a longer vacation. And what is an Asian Vacation that does not include the famed temples of Cambodia and especially Angkor Vat in its itinerary? Most Americans ill also make Vietnam a part of their Asian vacation for obvious, historical reasons. Indonesia, Laos, Burma and Bhutan are often visited not just for their scenic beauty, but also for spiritual and religious reasons.

Those who want to immerse themselves into Asia, but wish to avoid language barriers should consider visiting the more Westernized regions such as Singapore and Tokyo, Japan. These areas will offer accommodations and amenities very similar to what you will find back home. You should easily be able to navigate through the towns and many citizens will have some English-speaking skills so you don’t have to try out your Mandarin or Japanese. There are still many historical sights within the city and you may feel more comfortable there on your first visit to Asia.

The food is rich, the people warm and the scenery varies from towering mountains to beautiful seascapes. Italy truly offers something wonderful for every traveler.

With so many choices, it can be a daunting task to plan a visit to Italy. Your best course of action is planning a personalized itinerary, listing the top places you want to visit. One choice might be to explore Tuscany, a region synonymous with romance. Perhaps you’ll choose to spend your time exploring Rome, Milan and the Italian Riviera. Another fun choice would be to explore the island of Sicily.

Expert travel writer Karen Brown has created several special itineraries for travelers to Italy, allowing them to truly experience all the fun of this vast country. She also describes some of the best places to stay, and the following hotels are all recent winners of the Karen Brown Readers’ Choice Awards:

Selecting the most romantic place to stay in a nation that is known as one of the world’s great romantic destinations is no easy feat, but Karen Brown’s readers have voted, choosing Locanda dell’Amorosa as the “Most Romantic” spot in Italy. This Tuscan treasure was its own village and has been converted into hotel, restaurant and wine bar. Each of the guest rooms is different, simply furnished in an elegant style with antiques and rustic pieces. Views of the surrounding countryside and vineyards are sure to charm you. The hotel is a perfect home base for travelers wishing to explore Tuscany and Umbria.

Il Falconiere Relais, just a few kilometers outside of Cortona, is yet another Tuscan gem. The hotel, the recipient of the Karen Brown Readers’ Choice Award for Italy’s “Warmest Welcome,” offers an assortment of beautifully appointed, romantic guest rooms and suites. The setting at this hotel is amazing, from the views of the surrounding countryside to the ambiance of the dining room.

Albergo Villa Belvedere is proof that you can eat your cake and have it too. This beautiful villa was chosen by Karen Brown readers as Italy’s “Greatest Value.” While not luxurious, the guest rooms are clean and comfortable with simple furnishings, and some have pleasant views of Lake Como. Breakfast and dinner, both filled with hearty fare, are included in the rates, adding to the value of this lakeside retreat. The Cappelletti Family and their warm hospitality are another huge plus, and you’ll be treated more as a friend than a hotel guest.

Pamper yourself at one of the world’s great resorts on the stunning Amalfi Coast at Il San Pietro di Positano. Everything about this hotel is spectacular, from the unparalleled views from the many terraces to the elegant guest rooms to the gourmet cuisine served at the hotel’s restaurant. The list of amenities is enormous - a full-service spa, fitness center, swimming pool and tennis court. Best of all is a private beach cove where you can lounge and sunbathe to your heart’s content. Il San Pietro was chosen as Italy’s best “Splendid Splurge” by Karen Brown readers.

Holidays in Rome for Groups and Families

by Sarah Dudleymore

Rome is a city where you can pretty much spend much of your time on foot and walking has never been more exciting!. Wondering through Rome’s old historical center is one of the most enjoyable aspects of being in Rome.

Explore the magnificent buildings and their architecture, take in the street life, visit hundreds of churches as you stroll down the narrow cobblestone streets, go window shopping, and walk into any caf?-bar for that taste of capuccino flavor. Our advise is to start early in the moring and get ready for a long walk with a pair of comfortable shoes.

All of the most famous sites in Rome are very close to each other in the very city center, you can easily see the most important ones two-three days.
If you are coming to Rome with your family and children probably the best time in the year is April-May or September-October, when the weather is just perfect.

Italians are in love with children and you will be very welcome everywhere you go. Children will be provided with special high chairs, often available in Pizzerias and Trattorias.

Most of these places don’t rule out the fact that children eat only half-portions or share meals. The most amusing pizzerias for kids are the old fashioned ones. Here they can watch the chefs pound, stretch, and flip the though in the air which is something different they will always remember!

Nightlife in Rome is exciting and in latest years the number places to hangout and clubs have increased and are focusing on a more demanding clientele.

In Testaccio area you will easily find all the best tastes for all budgets and a wide variety of places. Another equally popular activity is to simply relax with friends and enjoy a good bottle of wine in the so-called “enoteche” (wine bars)located in any of the historic center’s beautiful squares.

Rome also has a large offer of entertainment with Jazz, Rock, Folk, South American and world music concerts in many venues scattered around the city.

Lately, many new Italian bands are having international success and are out into the spotlight, be sure to give them a try.

Summer months bring excellent open-air rock, jazz and world music festivals. Ippodromo delle Capannelle has become the most popular highlight of many Roman Summer Events, selling million tickets in sales. African music is not forgotten and in June-July there’s an excellent festival taking place in Villa Ada. Talents such as Angelique Kidjo and pianist Abdullah Ibrahim perform here.

The popular, small local food markets and the several curiosity markets are all very well-known and located in the city center. Trastevere has a famous flea market whilst in Campo dei Fiori you will find a very characteristic vegetable and flower market .

Roman markets offer a lively feel of entertainment. During the Christmas and Epiphany holidays, many stand owners present their goods in a variety of handicrafts, games, toys, and clothes. A perfect opportunity to stock up on Italian specialties.

No doubt that Rome is an excellent choice for group and family vacation!

by Dane Masters

Are you trying to plan your next vacation, but are overwhelmed and discouraged by how much it is going to cost? Join the club, most of us who are used to a nice vacation every year or two are suddenly finding it very hard to afford to go anywhere except locally. It really doesn’t have to be that way though, as long as you can spend some time searching for the best cheap hotel deals.

The most important thing to remember when you are searching for a good deal on a hotel is that cheap does not have to mean poor quality. It really isn’t worth it to save money if you are staying in an uncomfortable bed inside a flea ridden hotel room in a dodgy part of town. What you want to find is a nice hotel that for one reason or another is offering a great deal.

Keep in mind that when you are searching for a cheap hotel you still want it to be in a desirable area, be comfortable and offer the amenities that you want like a pool or fitness facility. Otherwise you may not have as much of an enjoyable time, and then what’s the point of being on vacation? You want to save money, but not sacrifice quality at the same time.

Let You Internet Do the Walking

Surf the Internet

Can You Say Google

The internet has a vast offering of travel sites that promise to have the best deals you will find. Don’t take their word for it; shop around. Compare prices on various sites. You may be able to save a few hundred dollars or a few cents here and there but end up with cheap hotel deals that you never knew existed. Many times, if your itinerary is flexible you can find even more cheap hotel deals if you are willing to travel during the week. Hotel stays on weekends are always more expensive than weekdays.

No matter what your destination is or what your budget may be, take a little extra time to research some cheap hotel deals. You may end up with a wonderful hotel and extra cash for spending.

Birdwatching Caribbean Cruise Is It For You?

Posted: under Travel.
Tags: Birdwatching, Birdwatching Caribbean Cruise, Cruise, Hobby, Travel, travel and leisure, vacation

by Greg F Williams

Who said you can not enjoy two delights at the same time? If you have to go on a Caribbean cruise, another thing you can do is birdwatching given that there are a lot of bird species living out there in the tropics.

Here are some of the sites you may like to visit on your cruise.

First is the Trinidad Asa Wright Nature Center that is 10 miles north of the town of Arima on Blanchisseuse Road. This place is situated in 200 acres of rain forest so you can walk around here and see different bird species hiding amongst the trees. If you have the time, try to spend at least 2 to 3 days here so you can take your time doing your hobby.

Next is the Bubali Pond in Aruba that is on the north side of eagle beach and south of De Olde Molen that happens to be a known windmill restaurant. This is not a wildlife preserve but rather a pond that is kept wet all year round. You can expect to see brown pelicans here in large groups as well as the Black crowned Night Herons. It is better to see these near dusk and sunrise.

In Aruba’s Spanish Lagoon, you can get to see brown pelicans, egrets, herons and frigates. Don’t be amazed to see large green and yellow parakeets that are double the size of those you see in the pet store that are often seen at sunset.

The Barbuda Frigate Bird Sanctuary is considered to be a secluded because the only way to get here is by boat. With the help of a guide, you can get to this place and see thousands of Fregata Magnificens or “man of war” birds that live here. The best time to visit is during the fall which happens to be the breeding season. Aside from them, you may also get to see 170 species of birds living together with them.

If your birdwatching Caribbean cruise makes a stop in Jamaica, you should take the time to visit the Rockland’s Bird Sanctuary. Here is a once in a lifetime chance for any birdwatcher to observe 289 different bird species of which 28 are endemic and 6 have just been introduced. There are also 10 bird species on the endangered list which includes the Black billed and Yellow billed parrots.

There is an entrance fee charged at this sanctuary and you can also pay extra for a guided tour, which is recommended that you do so. Here, you will get to see hummingbirds, Red billed Streamertails, Jamaican Mango, Black and Yellow faced Grassquits as well as their relative the Orangequits. All these species of birds you will be able to hand feed, if you wish to.

These places are just a few that you can visit while you are on a Caribbean cruise. There are many more locations available to you and all you want to do is search the internet to fined them.

The Caribbean cruise packages that are being provided do not come with birding tours, but once your cruise liner docks at port, you can sign up for one as they are readily available to you at many locations. So who said you can not enjoy two pleasures at the same time?

Rome - The Magic about Trastevere Area

Intro - Trastevere Area is famous for its restaurants, pubs, movie theaters, and nightlife. In the evening, all of the cafes and restaurants tables spill out over to the pavement, especially in the area of Santa Maria Square in Trastevere. The morning here has instead a unique and antique charm mainly due to Trastevere’s narrow cobbled alleyways.

The Area - Trastevere is the district that lays on the right bank of the Tiber. It was called “Trans Tiberem” (across the Tiber) and it was considered a precarious region.

It belonged to the Etruscans until Rome conquered it again and get back in control of both banks of the river. “Pons Sublicius” bridge (from Latin: “bridge built on piles”) was the only one way from Trastevere to the city (Rome). With the Emperor Augustus this area soon began to be considered part of the city.

During the Republic era in 509, the number of sailors and fishermen making a living from the river had increased, and many had taken up residence in Trastevere.

Then, during the Imperial Age, on the top of Trastevere hill rich romans built some luxury villas and gardens. For example Clodia (which was said to be Catullus lover) lived here, and Julius Caesar with his garden villa called ‘the Horti Caesaris’ lived here. The flat land below was used to be home for poor people and small.

Trastevere grew in a network of small, curly streets in the Middle Age because of structures on the front of buildings that left no space for carriages to pass. This is why a strong contrast between large houses for rich people and small houses for poor people are still creating such a contrast.

Up until 1400 Trastevere streets had no pavement, later bricks were used and then replaced by sampietrini (cobble stones).

The oldest church in the area is Santa Maria in Trastevere (probably among the firsts to host an open ceremony). Santa Maria is indeed the queen of all churches of the area and immediately became the focus point for devotion to the Virgin by its people. It is said that this church Mother of God was worshiped in Rome. In the Square there is an Octagonal fountain that today is a meeting point. The neighbourhood still has its own medieval character and the many changes occurred in the recent years haven’t changed it a lot.

Today this area still has its own style due to the narrow cobbled streets built in the medieval era. At night, both italians and tourists gather together around its many restaurants and pubs. Trastevere is attracting tourists, locals, artists, foreign expats, and many famous people and it is incredibly charming.

The area is home to John Cabot University, a private American University. Also to the American Academy in Rome, and the Rome campus of the Thomas More College of Liberal Arts. The Canadian University of Waterloo School of Architecture (between the months of September and December), and the American Pratt Institute School of Architecture therefore serving as a temporary home to an International student body.

In the 60s and 70s, the American musicians Frederic Rzewski and Richard Teitelbaum (Musica Elettronica Viva group), lived here in Via della Luce. The director of Spaghetti Westerns Sergio Leone, grew up in Viale Glorioso (you will see a marble plaque to his memory on the wall of the apartment building), and went to a Catholic private school in Trastevere.

Trastevere is definitely the place to stay when in Rome!
